Cleaning How-To

How to Clean a Microwave Properly

Microwaves collect food splatter quickly because heat dries residue onto the surfaces. A gentle steam method can loosen mess without harsh scrubbing.

Why microwaves get dirty so quickly

Microwaves heat food fast, which means splatter can dry quickly onto the ceiling, walls, door, and turntable. If it is reheated again and again, the residue becomes harder to wipe and odours can linger.

Loosen residue with steam

Place a microwave-safe bowl of water inside and heat it until steam forms. Let it sit for a few minutes before opening the door, allowing the steam to soften dried splatter. This reduces the need for heavy scrubbing.

Wipe from top to bottom

Remove the turntable if possible and wipe the ceiling, sides, door, and base with a damp cloth. Clean the turntable separately, then dry everything before replacing it.

  • Use a microwave-safe bowl only
  • Let hot water cool before handling
  • Avoid soaking electrical areas
  • Leave the door open briefly to air out

Clean the door and seal carefully

The door often holds fingerprints, steam marks, and small food residue around the edge. Wipe the inside of the door and the surrounding seal gently so the microwave closes properly and does not hold old smells.

What to avoid

Avoid soaking the microwave, spraying directly into vents, or using rough pads that can scratch the interior. The aim is to loosen residue, wipe it away, and dry the surface without pushing moisture into electrical areas.

  • Do not spray cleaner directly into vents
  • Do not use metal tools inside the microwave
  • Do not handle hot water too quickly
  • Do not forget underneath the turntable

Stop smells from lingering

Odours often stay because small food residue remains in seams or on the turntable. Wiping the door edges and drying the interior helps the microwave smell fresher. Leaving the door open briefly after cleaning can also help moisture escape.

Swiepp takeaway

A microwave is easiest to clean before splatter dries repeatedly, so a quick wipe after messy use can save a bigger clean later.
